Write a reviewBy Yoav Litvin I know Tel Aviv quite well. When I visit I walk around the city a lot, taking in the vibe and admiring the art. The neighborhoods of Neve Tzedek and Florentine in South Tel Aviv are a mixture of run down one-story houses, industrial lots, mechanic shops, artist studios and charming gentrified alleyways with beautifully renovated homes. Their unique character is an ideal backdrop for art, complementing pasteups, stencils, stickers and murals with a cocktail of decay, peeling paint, dirty concrete, limestone and the pungent smell of rough-on-the-lungs "Noblesse" Israeli cigarettes. [caption id=attachment_4732 align=alignnone width=2448] Jack TML[/caption] Tel Aviv has a thriving street art scene (see here), which like any has its ups and downs. Two years ago seemed like a climax of artistic expression, with an impressive collection of works from local as well as international artists present on the streets (see my impressions from then here). Yesterday though, during my walk I couldn't help but feel like the scene has waned. Several hard hitters have shifted their focus to galleries and/or the streets of Berlin and other Metropolises, leaving the streets of Tel Aviv dotted with older works and only a few newcomers present. [caption id=attachment_4730 align=alignnone width=2448] Wonky Monky[/caption] "Every year there's a round of young artists that floods the streets with their work. This year it just hasn't happened yet" says Dede, a local veteran artist, whose work is still very prevalent on the streets. "But the summer is young- maybe they are still preparing works. It's a matter of trends", he adds. [caption id=attachment_4731 align=alignnone width=2448] Dede[/caption] Admiring the art I noticed something missing. Where're the political pieces? To be fair, I did see some (see photos below), but these were few and far between. The pieces I mostly saw were intellectually as well as emotionally complex and interesting, however in a land dominated by conflict, political pieces were eerily absent. And with this new Israeli government, there's no shortage of material- especially in light of some very controversial anti-art statements by Israel's Minister of Culture Miri Regev. "Here in Tel Aviv, personal themes trump politics. Though it's different in contested cities like Jerusalem, where political themes take center stage." Dede adds. "We're flooded by bad news every day. Many times art serves as a means to escape all that."
