Andy Thornton complete Carr Bank Memorial Park bandstand
Andy Thornton Ltd
Architectural Metalwork, bandstands
Andy Thornton has completed the installation of one of its largest bandstands to date - an impressive Edwardian-style structure commissioned by Mansfield District Council.
The bandstand is located in the centre of Carr Bank Memorial Park, Mansfield which first opened to the public in 1924. The structure compliments the recently erected memorial in the park, in honour of fallen military personnel.
The £98K order was for the design, manufacture and site installation of the 9.7 metre diameter and 8.5 metre tall octagonal structure together with the supply of 20 cast iron park benches that were specially commissioned to match the bandstand railings.
The brief from Mansfield District Council was for Andy Thornton to design and tender for a bespoke bandstand. We were able to fulfill the design criteria with a 3D visual and accompanying CAD drawings, allowing the client to see exactly what would be manufactured.
The bandstand has been fabricated in prime quality structural steel and features cast aluminium support columns, pedestals, ornate floral capitals and spandrel brackets. Bespoke decorative balustrades to seven sides and a double entry gate include integral handrails and exactly match old archive photographs supplied by the council.
The decorative two-tier roof section incorporates a zinc finish roofing sheet in a curved profile over a steel skeletal framework and includes intricate cast frieze panels, crestings and a turned finial. A solid oak boarded ceiling at eaves height with integral vandal proof lighting and innovative concealed water run-offs and power outlets provide the final touch.
The new bandstand is expected to become an established visitor attraction in the park and provide a much needed outdoor venue to showcase local musical and dramatic talent now it is open.
