Andy Thornton bespoke furniture at Jamie's Italian, Piccadilly

Andy Thornton has recently worked closely with Martin Brudnizki Design Studio to produce the main contract furniture package for the new Jamie’s Italian restaurant in Piccadilly Circus, London. Situated on the corner of Denman Street and Sherwood Street, this iconic landmark building is the new flagship venue for this hugely successful Jamie Oliver brand.
With its unique triangular wedge shape and arrangement over five floors, the designers were challenged with the unusual layout but have made best use of this to create character and atmosphere on each floor. Whilst at first glance the furniture may look fairly standard, the quality of the manufacture and in particular the bespoke finishes applied, make it stand out from the rest.
The ground floor features full height windows by the entrance, a large dining room with oak wall panelling and flooring, banquette seating and an attractive bar with traditional panelled counter. Along the bar are backless versions of the Andy Thornton Toledo bar stool, which combine a steel frame and circular footrest in a dull patina finish with simple timber seats.
Andy Thornton supplied all the farmhouse chairs, a mix of spindle and slat designs which have been stained oak or colour washed, then hand distressed and waxed. They have been upholstered in Crest Old English Wine leather, tanned to give a pleasing distressed finish which ages well over time. Even the brass studding around the leather has been painstakingly darkened to give an authentic vintage feel.
The first and second floor dining areas feature exposed brick-work and rustic oak flooring, combined with more farmhouse chairs and banquette seating. Andy Thornton supplied their popular Liberty pedestal table bases in black cast iron with self-adjusting feet, matched with hand distressed and lacquered solid oak tops.
Up a few more steps is the popular Antipasti Bar, with its eye-catching Italian-style deli counter display. Here Andy Thornton supplied specially commissioned self-aligning bar stools with antiqued satin steel pedestals. These have been upholstered in an aged blue leather, with contrasting stitching to the pleated backs.
There’s even an Andy Thornton presence outside, with bistro tables with Carrara marble tops on the roof garden terrace and bench seating along Sherwood Street pavement outside the restaurant.
