Caravan tyres should be changed every 5 to 7 years, without fail, regardless of the tread depth remaining. Recently I was called out to a caravan where the owner had seen cracks on the sidewalls, when I checked the dates, it turned out that these were the original tyres on the caravan and they were 29 years old. I learnt that the owner had just bought the caravan last year, he was new to caravanning and didn't know anything about them. I suggested that he read up on the subject on the caravan club website and also told him he should have it serviced, as the gas, brakes, electrics and water may not have been checked in a long time.

Tyre Labelling

A new European tyre labelling law comes info force from this July, all new tyres produced after July 1st must have the easy to read tyre label designed to help consumers make the right choice. Older tyres can still be sold without the label as tyre depots run down stock, the full law comes into effect from November 2012. From November all tyre dealers must advise the consumer of the label information before selling a tyre.
