Colour Fastness Testing
The Laboratory At The Birmingham Assay Office
laboratory, Assay Office, quality assurance testing
The current bead craze has impacted significantly on The Laboratory. Coloured costume jewellery beads which may be made from plastics, wood, glass, metal or other materials require testing to determine the resistance of the colour to the action of water, sea-water, perspiration and rubbing to ensure theymeet customers’ general expectations of the product in normal use. The innovative team at The Laboratory have developed a unique method for testing beads to evaluate the possibility of cross staining of all types of textiles in contact with various solutions for a prolonged period and to rubbing. The method is based on International Standards and has recently been assessed by UKAS. We are still in the process of gaining accreditation for beads, but assessors reported they were extremely impressed with the procedure and accreditation to ISO 17025 is anticipated in the near future. This is in addition to the tests already offered for textiles.
