Indian Wildife Tours offer a variety of personally led wildlife and cultural tours to Northern and Central India, which can be tailor made to suit the individual.
One of the tours includes a beautiful trip to the Chambal Nature Reserve. This reserve provides excellent bird watching opportunities as well as unsurpassed views of both the endangered Gharial and Gangetic River Dolphin.
The Chambal River is an exceptionally beautiful and peaceful river. It is a tributary of the Yamuna River in Central India. The beautiful river flows north-northeast through the state of Madhya Pradesh, passing through the state of Rajasthan, then forming the boundary between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh before turning southeast to join the Yamuna in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
The Chambal River remains one of North India's most unpolluted rivers. Because of this, it is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The National Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary is most famous for the Gharial and the rare Gangetic River Dolphin. This river provides outstanding opportunities for bird watching and for photography.
This National Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary was founded in 1978 and is part of a large area co-administered by Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The National Chambal Sanctuary was formed to protect the pristine river ecosystem, complete with its varied flora, aquatic life and avifauna. There is approximately 400km of the river within the reserve. Apart from the Gangetic River Dolphin and Gharial, the sanctuary is also home to Mugger Crocodiles and many species of birds, including Indian Skimmers.
The National Chambal Sanctuary currently boasts of over 290 species of resident and migratory bird species, including large nesting colonies of the rare Indian Skimmers. You will often find Sarus Cranes, Painted Storks, River Lapwings, Small Pratincoles, Great Thick-knees and large numbers of Lesser Whistling Ducks, to name but a few. Chambal is a must visit site for bird watching!
The Sanctuary is best explored by boat, and there is spectacular wildlife viewing and photographic opportunities on this calm and gentle river.
