On February 28th we were honoured with an evening with Jane Bennett-Powell. Jane’s career began in local radio in Sheffield, and progressed via the BBC’s News Trainee scheme, to London. Writing for film and video was part of the course and a much needed skill for a young sub-editor working in the TV newsroom during the Falklands War and later Newsnight. Then the offer of a job at Channel 4 News followed. Working alongside picture editors with the aim of producing compelling news stories was part of the reporter’s role which Jane enjoyed, especially when it entailed assembling the skilful contributions of camera operators, producers and fixers. She taught production skills, including script-writing, to journalists in former Yugoslavia in the late nineties. Her portfolio career now includes journalism and training, and communications management. The evening proved to be very informative and entertaining at the same time. It was also good to see members from Haywards Heath, Sutton and Copthorne clubs venturing out and braving the stormy evening.
