What Surface Damp Proof Membranes Can Do For You!
Damp Proof, damp proof membranes, ultra floor
Moisture in subfloors is a huge problem to the flooring industry both in terms of cost and reputation. The moisture can be as a result of a newly constructed floor not being allowed to dry out fully OR an old design subfloor with an absence of a base damp proof membrane.
As moisture rises it will meet the smoothing compounds, adhesives and floor coverings and can cause problems including blistering and bubbling of sheet flooring, shrinkage of carpets, bowing or cupping of timber and delamination of flooring materials such as resin coatings. To ensure that the finished floor performs as desired it is necessary to check the progression of moisture and, where appropriate, seal it in. This is where a Surface Proof Membrane can help!
Surface damp proof membranes act as a barrier to rising damp by controlling moisture vapour release from the concrete substrate. They should be used in areas where a cementitious floor has either no DPM or an ineffective one (provided there is no significant hydrostatic pressure). They should also be used in situations where residual construction moisture is still present (above 75%RH) and as a consequence can enable a speedier project completion time or can accelerate the building programme if other delays have been encountered.
The renowned Ultra Floor range includes the DPM IT liquid applied damp proof membrane system, available as a one or two coat with an optional accelerator additive. DPM IT one coat is specifically designed for applications on new build projects where there is still residual construction moisture. It is recommended for cement based subfloors where relative humidity is no greater than 92% and is coloured blue to aid identification during application. DPM IT two coat is ideal for use on subfloors where the base DPM is not present or has been breached and can be used to suppress residual construction moisture in cement based subfloors for moisture levels up to 98% RH. DPM IT A is the liquid additive that can be utilised with DPM IT one or two coat where there is a requirement to speed up the curing process.
