Ultrascape’s BS 7533 Compliant Mortar Paving System has been used in Stranraer’s multi-million pound regeneration scheme which aims to secure the town’s future prosperity.
Stranraer is the key ferry port connecting Scotland with Belfast and Northern Ireland and is the hub for one of the world’s largest ferry operators, Stena Line. Dumfries and Galloway Council, in partnership with local businesses and residents, took forward plans to positively redevelop the town.
Dave McRoberts of Dumfries and Galloway Council collaborated with Smith Scott Mullan Scottish Architects to re-design the area. Improvements included repairs to the castle and redevelopment work to Castle Court as well as developing the waterfront and east pier. Castle Street has been made more pedestrian friendly by reducing kerb heights, and pavements have been repaved and edged with new granite kerbing.
Dumfries & Galloway Council specified Ultrascape’s BS 7533 compliant mortar paving system to lay and re-point the new and original granite setts. Approval was initially granted from Historic Scotland, who were keen to preserve the town’s heritage. The system comprises of a pre-packed, pre-blended, fully tested range of bedding, priming and jointing mortars that meet and exceed the rigors of BS 7533.
Ultrascape’s Pro-Bed HS, fine bedding mortar was supplied in 30 tonne bulk silos, perfect for large scale schemes where high volumes of bedding concrete are required at the touch of a button. Pro-Bed HS creates the ideal foundation for laying paving elements where a rigid or bound base is required. .
Ultrascape Pro-Prime Slurry Primer provides an exceptional bond between the paving element and Ultrascape ProBed HS fine bedding mortar. It offers the additional adhesive strength required to meet the strict standards of BS 7533.
Ultrascape Flowpoint rapid set flowable grout exceeds all of the requirements of the latest British Standard (BS 7533). Fast and efficient to apply, affording the ability to grout significant areas of paving quickly and cleanly, Flowpoint grout is also rapid setting, which means areas of paving can be opened to traffic soon after installation.
Ultrascape’s Joint Fix, resin-based surface sealant, was applied to the flexibly paved areas to stabilise the joints. Joint Fix bonds the particles of jointing sand together, and offers protection from aggressive street cleaning, eliminating the need for ongoing maintenance.
Dumfries & Galloway Council chose Ultrascape’s materials because of their excellent track record; having used them previously on several projects. The BS 7533 compliant system provided a high quality, durable finish which was so important for as investment such as this.
The Stranraer scheme took several months to complete, most of which fell during the harsh winter of 2010/2011. Freezing winter conditions took their toll on the country but did not affect the performance of Ultrascape’s products, which continued to deliver excellent results, ensuring the project was completed on time.
