Building and refurbishment contractor, Aztech Building Services, have recently installed an Ultracrete coverTEC® B125 composite cover and frame in one of the main thoroughfares at Bristol University.
The University of Bristol is widely regarded as one of the UK’s best universities. Based in the heart of the city, and with over 15,700 students, the University not only forms an important part of the city’s history and heritage, but also plays a significant role in its future. It is one of the most competitive Universities in the UK, with an applicant ratio of 40:1 for the most popular courses such as Economics and Law and is ranked as 15th in the world in terms of reputation with employers.
The University had been receiving complaints from students and visitors who had been slipping over on a particular manhole cover situated in the footpath to the main building’s entrance. The metal cover had become worn and polished and was posing a serious health and safety issue.
Ultracrete recommended the installation of their coverTEC® class B125 pedestrian access cover to resolve the issue. The cover offers a superior solution for use in footpaths and cycle lanes, or where occasional vehicular access is required. It is made from a glass resin instead of conventional metal and wear is negated by the combination of the materials and design. The cover is extremely durable, lightweight and inert so it will not corrode. It is not electrically conductive, protecting pedestrians from the possibility of accidental electrical shock and has low thermal conductivity. It is manufactured with an anti-slip/skid surface that is equivalent in value (PSVR 60>) to a high quality road surface and maintains its non slip properties even when wet.
The frame and cover were bedded and pointed using Ultracrete’s M60 fast setting rapid strength bedding mortar, ideal for use with all access covers, as well as for the rapid bonding of granite setts, flags, emergency repairs and bedding of kerbs. M60 is supplied pre-blended in 25kg bags or plastic containers and requires only the addition of water. The product can be used from 10mm-75mm in one pass, with greater depths possible using the layer-upon-layer method. Ultracrete M60 achieves exceptional bond strength without the use of a primer and a compressive strength of 22N/mm² in one hour and can be opened to traffic thereafter. The product can be bulked out with the addition of up to 30% hard stone clean aggregate.
Ultracrete’s coverTEC® composite frames and covers are being adopted by companies who have increasing litigation concerns and a responsible attitude towards public or employee health and safety. Equally, companies require better performance from their manhole covers at significantly reduced cost of ownership e.g. whole life cost.
