By utilising Kaizen techniques Ultra Floor has reduced their landfill waste by 51%, securing their shortlist selection by FeRFA.
FeRFA, the Resin Flooring Association, will hold their annual best practice awards and AGM event on the 18th November. Ultra Floor has been shortlisted for the ‘Environmental Initiative of the Year’; a new award added this year.
The award will be judged on the company’s commitment to environmental best practice, its engagement in recycling initiatives and a whole company approach to meeting environmental targets. For many years now Ultra Floor has focused numerous resources on protecting the environment and thus reducing their impact on it. Being shortlisted for the award is recognition of their various company-wide initiatives.
The company boasts a lengthy list of both sustainable and environmentally-friendly projects already implemented and continuously impacting positively on the business and consequently the flooring industry. Such an extensive list to some may seem enough, but Ultra Floor’s commitment is somewhat different. They are committed to ‘continually raising the bar’, striving to achieve a consistent improvement on their performance towards a truly sustainable future.
Ultra Floor’s employees are aware of their responsibilities towards reducing their environmental impact both collectively and individually. By utilising Kaizen techniques they have reviewed, defined, implemented, controlled and reduced their landfill waste by an outstanding 51%.
Kaizen stands for ‘continuous improvement’; it derives from the Japanese words ‘Kai’ and ‘Zen’ meaning ‘change’ and ‘good’ respectively. The technique involves a number of employees from various levels working as a team to achieve an aim.
The primary aim of such a Kaizen event was to define current handling of waste and to look at ways to improve by using process, awareness and seeking better controls to dispose of all material types, reducing general landfill waste and associated costs. A total of 35 materials were reviewed.
Darren Gough, QHSE Manager said: “I am delighted we have reduced our landfill waste by such a huge percentage in a short space of time. We are now looking into new ways of achieving a zero waste to landfill. We are honoured to be shortlisted for the Environmental award on the 18th November, and look forward to a splendid evening.”
