Coventry Civic Centre public realm scheme and Poynton Town Centre regeneration project have both been honored in this year’s Highways Magazine’s ‘Excellence Awards’. These outstanding improvements were created using the Ultrascape BS 7533 compliant mortar paving system.
Coventry City Council were awarded the ‘Most Innovative Highway Authority Project/Scheme of the Year’ title at this month’s ceremony held in London. The scheme consisted of £10.7m works, with the objective of improving Coventry city centre, through public realm and local infrastructure improvement.
Ultrascape have built a strong working relationship with Coventry City Council over the past 10 years+, which has resulted in their materials being the preferred choice for the city’s major regeneration paving projects.
Station Street, Bull Yard and Broadgate Square all underwent improvements to increase and update pedestrian areas, and repave the bus route that runs through these locations. The improvements were completed using Pro-Bed HS bedding mortar, Pro-Prime slurry primer and Flowpoint flowable grout. The three products make up Ultrascape’s renowned mortar paving system, and are proven to be BS 7533 compliant under UKAS testing methods.
Overall the judges’ stated: “An holistic approach to a large scheme which included many elements. It showed a great deal of innovation and provides excellent long term sustainable solutions which benefits not only pedestrians and road users but also enhances local economy.”
The system was also used during the regeneration of Poynton Town Centre. The scheme tackled congestion and the impact of heavy traffic through the application of shared space principles. Shared Space is a proven concept for handling the interaction between the motor vehicle and other road users. The introduction of twin roundels to replace the traffic signal controlled junction has created a low-speed, continuous-flow traffic movement, typically at less than 20 mph and is a paved construction (ref Poynton Town Council).
Natural stone paving was used throughout the scheme and bedded in all areas using Ultrascape Pro-Bed HS. Slurry primer Pro-Prime was used in addition to provide an exceptional bond, and finally Flowpoint was applied to grout all joints. This project took home the prestigious ‘Congestion Reduction Scheme of the Year’ award.
