Cliffe High Street in East Sussex was once home to narrow footways and a relatively wide carriageway from the days when it formed part of the main East-West route for traffic. Pedestrians often had to step into the road to pass one another – a regular inconvenience for all users.
East Sussex County Council decided to bring the town back to life and introduce The Living Cliffe Scheme, including a pedestrian zone, to retain the vibrant and distinctive character of this historic street. The new street would provide an attractive, pedestrian-friendly area that can accommodate loading and cycling (prohibiting vehicular access except for disabled parking).
The Ultrascape team visited site prior to work commencing and carried out a live demonstration of Ultrascape Pro-Bed HS Fine Bedding Concrete, Pro-Prime Slurry Primer and Flowpoint Rapid Setting Flowable Grout.
The Living Cliffe Scheme has ended all through traffic from the main section of the Cliffe. The pedestrian zone involved narrowing the road between Bear Yard and Morris Road and replacing the current road surface with blocks to match the other road surfaces along with the brick footways being completely re-laid.
Ultrascape Pro-Bed HS fine bedding concrete was used to bed the new road surface and pavement brick. Pro-Bed HS has been specifically formulated to meet and exceed the strict demands of BS 7533. Ultrascape Pro-Prime slurry primer was used in conjunction with Ultrascape Pro-Bed HS to provide a more durable bond between the stones’ surface and the bedding mortar promoting an adhesion of greater than 2N/mm².
Ultrascape Flowpoint, an innovative rapid setting flowable grout, was used for the joint throughout the high street to achieve a contemporary finish. Flowpoint again is formulated to meet the strict demands of BS 7533 for rigid construction where a fluid consistency and early trafficking are essential. It is able to reach a bond strength of >1.5N/mm² and compressive strength of 49.6N/mm² which exceed the requirements of BS 7533. It can be opened to foot traffic within 1 hour and vehicular traffic in 4 hours.
With the help of Ultrascape, Cliffe High Street was completed on time matching the vibrant and distinctive character the council wanted. Contractors May Gurney and East Sussex County Council are extremely pleased with the performance of the products.
