The Instarmac Group, founder of the Ultra Tile and Ultra Floor brands, has focused numerous resources on reducing their environmental impact and such efforts are now reaping the rewards they deserve.

At Instarmac, environmental matters have never been ignored. As global temperatures rise there is an increased amount of pressure from governments and individuals on businesses to increase their sustainability performance. This is especially true for manufacturers as the industrial consumption of energy and fossil fuels contributes most to the amount of CO² released into the atmosphere, thus aggravating the global warming problem.

For this reason, understanding your impact on the climate is of primary importance in the process of reducing its effects. Instarmac sees caring for the environment as one of its key objectives and in the last few years Instarmac have been working hard to analyse and quantify their performance. To date, Instarmac have implemented a number of greener initiatives which demonstrate their commitment to a sustainable future, including an on-site recycling program, grey water process, plastic containers recycling scheme, zero emissions forklift trucks and electronic fax, order and purchasing systems.

The optimum use of materials and consumables is not a new concept but it is one that Instarmac has implemented successfully, particularly due to the commitment of the entire company personnel. The efficient use of electricity, water, fuel and other non-renewable resources in their offices and factory has long been established as standard practice, not only because of cost implications. By educating employees and providing a forum for their ideas, Instarmac have not only been able to implement best practice but also ensure a very high level of dedication to environmentally friendly initiatives.

Consequently, at this year’s prestigious TTA awards, Ultra Tile were triumphant once again and took home the 'Best Initiative to Reduce Environmental Impact' award for the second year running. A remarkable feet of recognition as no other company has won a TTA award consecutively. The award recognises the importance of the environment and sustainability within the tile industry.
Additionally, earlier this year Instarmac announced that they had secured a position in ‘The Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies to Work For 2009’ list. Out of the 100 companies who secured a position, Instarmac was recognised as the 3rd greenest company, demonstrating that Instarmac’s environmental policies and procedures are receiving nationwide recognition as well as industry-wide.

Instarmac have continued their certification to the international standard, ISO 14001 for a further 3 years - an accreditation that they have held since 2006. Instarmac’s recent re-certification audit results were very encouraging and demonstrated a robust environmental management system supporting their continued strength and environmental commitment.

The company’s efforts continue to improve, Richard Carter, Instarmac’s Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental Manager explains: “We are continually striving to push the boundaries of recycling, currently focusing on the management of our waste streams, which have been broken down into 35 separate streams in recent months. This is segregated during normal process operations reducing additional none value added work.”

“Our carbon footprint has received another massive reduction since September due to our new relationship with Briers, our waste management and recycling partners, who are located less than 5 miles from our Tamworth head office. Briers will help us to dramatically reduce Instarmac’s impact on landfill further, and their close location allows us to better educate and inform our employees, through scheduled visits to gain first-hand knowledge and to witness the impact of their efforts conducted while at work,” he adds.

In summary Richard states: “Recycling is now a way of life for us here at Instarmac.”

Overall, Instarmac is committed to continuously investing in research and development, and the latest equipment and technologies, in order to achieve not only a year-on-year improvement in performance but also a truly sustainable long-term future. Instarmac feel that they have the ability to continually provide customers with high quality products and services in ways that enhance the environment. As pressure rises to increase sustainability performance and the effectiveness of environmental policies, Instarmac can offer peace of mind to all their customers.
