Coaching in organisations is a practice that has evolved from the traditional aspect of the sports coach, who is an individual with knowledge, insight and skills designed to get the best out of an individual or teams. At IamHR we have skilled coaches that can offer services on an individual, team and/or executive level. Helping you to overcome specific problems in a way that enhances the knowledge and skills of the individuals involved as well as improving the performance of the whole organisation.
Coaching in organisations can be as simple as a designated coach working with an individual on a one to one basis, with the individual seeking to find solutions to a specific problem. The coach asks the individual a series of questions to prompt them to think about their problem in ways that they might not naturally approach them. This will develop not only understanding of what is at the root of the problem but should also enhance the skills of the individual to approach problems in a different way in the future.
A more complex approach to coaching in an organisation is a whole team being trained to work with one another and with other stakeholders on a coaching basis. This requires the development of skill sets designed that the team work as individuals in a different way. For example, rather than a manager asking an individual for advice the individual works with the manager so that the manager can arrive at the answer themselves, developing the managers skills so that they can utilise this approach in the future to develop their own solutions rather than achieving just the answer to one question in the short-term. This can have beneficial long-term impact on the resource utilised in hand-holding managers in areas they could develop their own skill sets as well as improving managers own skills and confidence.
Executive coaching requires a more in-depth approach to general coaching. This is because of the nature of the skills required to work at an executive level. An executive level programme might include the following elements – a short introductory meeting to develop a focus on the individual’s context, goals and desired outcomes. This may include discussions with other individuals i.e. an executive’s manager to define what is to be achieved. Followed by a series of 6-8 sessions carrying out coaching discussions and activities. During this period the executive will have access to their coach as support while they make their transition to achieving their outcomes.
