Consultancy has been a main stay of Mike's activity since establishing his business in 2003. Mike is happy to work alone in this area or to put together teams, or join other teams for larger scale projects.
Activities have included:
- Mike has been a Reviewer with NHS Quality Improvement Scotland for more than a decade, specialising in the review of learning disabiity services, but also contributing to reviews of mental health and older peoples' services. Mike was engaged by NHS QIS to develop and then evaluate their approach to involving service users and carers as peer Reviewers alongside professional colleagues in reviewing the learning disability services in all Health Board areas in Scotland.
- Service reviews and evaluations for several organisations, including: ACE Advocacy Service West Lothian; Bield Housing Association; Edinburgh Home Link Partnership; ENABLE; Home Farm Breaks; Partnership Housing Limited; Powerful Partnerships; SHELTER
- Mike carried out work for Haringey Council to assist them in designing their approach in working collaboratively with NHS Haringey to deliver a programme of Health Action Plans to people with learning disabilities; he was invited back to assist them in developing their management of school to adult transitions for young disabled people
- A programme with South Lanarkshire Council over the course of 18 months to examine the needs of older carers of people with learning disabilities, and to improve approaches to working with carers in planning for the future
- Mike chaired a working group for the Tayforth Scottish Social Services Council Learning Network on CPD, and ran a workshop on this subject for the Voluntary Scottish Social Services Workforce Unit
- Mike has an interest in innovative and new service development, and has worked with Ptarmigan Staffing Solutions to develop a staffing agency, and with Dearle and Henderson, urban regeneration specialists, on development of older peoples' services
- From his background in service management, Mike has been prepared to take on interim service management, and for a period of 9 months he acted as a part-time chief executive for Powerful Partnerships, an Edinburgh based learning disability advocacy organisation with whom he volunteers.
Mike has particular interests and skills in helping bring people together from different stakeholder perspectives to address issues and seek co-operative ways of working. He has alot of experience in working with people from different professional backgrounds, from different statutory agencies, and from cross sectoral interests, and is especially keen to assist in involving service users and carers in engaging with service providers and planners
