From sunrise to sunset Fethiye is a magical place.

Rich in history where ancient Lycian and Roman sites can seen in the heart of resort. There is a lovely marina with sleek modern yachts, traditional Turkish Gullets and numerous pleasure boats. The lively waterfront is home to some really lovely waterside restaurants which are great for a morning coffee, a spot of lunch and create a pretty early evening setting for a sunset dinner.

The old town centre in Fethiye is a maze of narrow winding streets with local crafts shops like lace, leather, carpets, spice, sweet shops and the like, intermingled with little bars, restaurants and fuddling shops with a diverse mix from fake designer to high class jewelery shops. If you love eating out, as we do, you have a huge array of basic to fine restaurants all bidding for your custom, from traditional Turkish through to fine European dining.

We love Fethiye, it has a friendly feel to the place with quiet little suburbs like Karagozlar where there is a pretty little bay, not a great deal there, a few nice bars, restaurants and hotels and a pretty waterfront. Tuesday is an important day in Fethiye, it is market day. You must see the beautiful array of fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and meat, great if you are on a self catering holiday as we prefer. The market also offers all the usual touristy items, leather, clothes and such, but it's huge and teeming with life and people, well worth a look.

Close to Fethiye there are some fabulous beach resorts like Olu Deniz with it's famous "Blue Lagoon" where the water quality and temperature is always lovely. The wide sweeping sandy (in parts shingle) beach is an award winning beach and can be best appreciated from the cliff road as you drive down to it. Calis beach across the Fethiye bay which you can reach by water taxi is very popular for British tourist and is also nice. So if you are a beach and sun person you are well catered for. The local scenery can simply described as beautiful, with mountains, yes 6,000 feet mountains like nearby Babadag dropping into the crystal clear blue waters of the Mediterranean.

If you like it hot, great go in July or August, where temperatures can top 40 regularly. We love this part of Turkey in May and June or best of all September or October, when the sea is at it warmest, the beaches are nice and quiet and you have no problems getting in a lovely restaurant.

One of the real treats about this lovely area of Turkey are the beautiful sunrises which we enjoyed from our holiday apartment. Watching the sun peak over the distant mountains and glisten off the blue Mediterranean is simply one of life's moments. Then there were the sunsets! Not to be missed!! Watch the warm glow of the sun burn down into a shimmering sea.
