Pilates is a complete exercise method designed to elongate, strengthen and stabilise your body. Whilst exercises place emphasis on the deep abdominal muscles and back muscles, Pilates provides you with a comprehensive exercise programme that works on integrating the whole body. Pilates is unique in its holistic approach, drawing from the knowledge of anatomy and the practicing of the exercises with thought and precision, hence Pilates is often called a 'body and mind' technique.
Devised by Joseph Pilates in Germany during the first half of the 20th century, the technique was adopted by athletes and dancers in America before being brought to the UK. In recent years Pilates has become popular with the masses and with the support of clinical research backing up its fitness credentials, osteopaths, physiotherapists and general practitioners recommend Pilates as one of the safest forms of exercise.
In a Pilates class, movements and exercises are performed on mats on the floor, sometimes using equipment such as exercise balls. The exercises are slow and gentle, meaning that Pilates is beneficial for just about anyone. But don't be fooled, whilst the Pilates exercises may feel gentle during the class, if done correctly your muscles will feel like they have worked hard the next day. The original principles of Pilates focus on breathing, concentration, precision and controlled, flowing movements. Our instructor, Filipe, insists on small class sizes (a maximum of 5) so that he can ensure he gives everyone the attention they need so that they perform their exercises correctly. Those harbouring injuries can have their exercises adjusted to prevent further injury or help with rehabilitation.
