Thermal expansion and contraction of masonry surfaces can be considerable on south and west elevations of buildings leading to cracking of masonry and slippage off damp proof courses. Movement joints should be installed at a maximum of 6.0m spacings on long walls likely to be affected by large temperature variations. Expansion joints are often omitted or forgotten about even on modern buildings leading to structural cracking problems. We can offer a retro fitting service of expansion joints in such cases to alleviate stresses within the fabric of a wall.
