One of the biggest questions many potential buyers have before buying a hot tub or swim-spa is: 'So, how much will it cost me to run this?' The benchmark that a lot of people seem to have is somewhere in the thousands of pounds a year region which is, quite frankly, a myth. Even the most power hungry, most poorly insulated tubs don't reach that price! The running costs for a well insulated hot tub, using a 3kw heater will be around 50p-£1 per day maximum. Doing some quick maths that means no more than £31 a month or £372 a year. That is almost one third of the price that most people associate with hot tub running costs. Of course, electricity usage isn't the only cost. You also have the price of chemicals. There is a daunting stigma around this topic with many individuals believing that they will end up shelling out masses of money on chemicals to keep their hot tubs clean and happy. This is most definitely not the case. The cost of chlorine won't cost more than £50 a year and the other chemicals such as pH regulators, alkalinity balancers etc won't cost you any more than that either. So, adding that to the price you are looking at around £450 a year maximum; which is still more than half the cost buzzing around in most peoples heads. Realistically though, the price would be more likely under £400 once the hot tub is properly set up and looked after! The costs can be significantly reduced by making sure that the users of the hot tub are clean and even shower before they go in. Heat loss can be prevented by making sure that your hot tub cover is replaced after use to trap the heat within the shell. Also, if the hot tub is located outside we suggest you invest in any optional hot tub insulation should it be offered by the retailer. All the hot tubs supplied by Spas Unlimited are well insulated to begin with but also have optional insulation for the hot tub cabinet to further reduce any heat loss from the cabinet to the outside air, significantly lowering heating costs. Costs are always subject to a number of variables, including the number of times per week it is used, how clean the users are and how often the filter cycles needs to be run, if the hot tub is located in a totally open environment or in an enclosure of a cabin, the temperature of the air and environment when the hot tub is in use. Cabins Unlimited, our sister company specialize in timber buildings and enclosures which will help with the reduction in energy and running costs. Other costs associated with your hot tub are the hot tub filters which will need changing occasionally. The costs associated with the filters can also be reduced by lengthening the life of the filters through regular cleaning of them. Also ensuring that users shower and remove make-up/hair products prior to use will lengthen filter life. Fake tan products also block the filters and sometimes cannot be removed through the filter washing process thus reducing the life of the filter. Our team here at Spas Unlimited are more than happy to help explain the costs associated with running your hot tub and we welcome you to come and visit our hot tub showroom here in Dereham Norfolk where you can see our range of hot tubs and even try out our wet test hot tub which is for customers to try before they commit.
