Mount Everest (8848m) was named after Sir Geroge Everest, the British Surveyor General of India who first established its height in 1856. To the people of this region she is 'Chomolungma' and to the rest of the Nepalese she is known as 'Sagarmatha'. From the time of its discovery, it has been the dream of many mountaineers and adventure seekers to climb or be near the world highest mountain. Everest and the region of Khumbu is home to the Sherpas, renowned mountaineers and guides. They have been associated with Everest Expeditions since 1920 and were made more famous when Sherpa Tenzing Norgay climbed Everest with Edmund Hillary in 1953 for the first time.
Everest Base Camp Trekking is where climbers from the world over gather each year to climb the 8848m Sagarmatha, the highest mountain on earth. It is an ultimate goal for many trekkers who just want to be near this sacred mountain and have a once in a life time experience. This is a tough and demanding trek but not technical so is within reach of most determined walkers. The view from the Base Camp is up towards the peak across the breathtaking Khumbu icefall that leads to the South Col. To get the classic view of Everest and all the surrounding mountains, you need to climb the summit of Kala Patthar (Black Rock) at 5545m. This is best done at dawn when the mountains are brought to life by the sunrise.
