The Regent’s Canal takes its name from the man who commissioned it in 1812: the Prince Regent, who became King George IV. Designed to link the Grand Union Canal with the River Thames at Limehouse basin, its first stretch from Paddington and Little Venice to Camden opened in 1816. One of the architects involved was the famous John Nash, and he also designed some of the elegant houses which surround the pool. Most commonly seen creatures along the stretch you travel are: swans, geese, mallards, coots, moorhens, cormorants and tufted ducks – you may also catch a glimpse of a more unusual animal, which is in fact an invasive species: the red-eared terrapins. At dusk and dawn you may see Daubenton and Pipistrelle bats.
