Children were often given cold chicken nuggets and chips, drinks with high sugar content, large portions of food and a repetitive menu in their lunchbox. As a result life’s canvas was invited to run a workshop for parents and talk in school assemblies to children on healthy packed lunches and snacks as part of the school’s Healthy Eating Week.
Workshop and Assemblies
In the workshop for parents we looked at a healthy diet, The Eatwell Plate, different food groups and the affects of an unhealthy diet. Parents then had the opportunity to ask questions around different types of fat, ways to deal with fussy eaters, alternatives to drinks with high sugar content and hot meals which can be provided as a packed lunch. Each parent was then asked to design a 5 day menu based on The Eatwell Plate which they could use immediately for their child.
In the school assemblies we looked at a healthy diet, The Eatwell Plate and the affects of an unhealthy diet and then children were asked to give alternatives to food such as takeaway pizza, chocolate and milkshakes.
Feedback from parents
When asked “as direct result of the workshop what are you going to do differently?” answers included:
“Give my children smaller size meals and look at the balance of what is on the plate.”
“Put more chopped vegetables into their lunch boxes.”
“Involve my children in the process of making meals.”
“I will try over and over again (15 times!)
