DJ Somiak, the producer & DJ & composer from Peru. Where does he find the time to breathe? I decided to find out...
Jake: Hello. Do I call you Mr. DJ? Or how should I address you? Thanks for agreeing to let me interview you. It sounds like you've been stupidly busy. How are things?
DJ Somiak: Hello Jake!! Well, you can call me as you want, Mr. DJ or DJ or simply Somiak, these are the same, so no problem...
Jake: So tell me something about Peru. I hear it's a stunning place that I have yet to visit..
DJ Somiak: Peru is GREAT!!! Like other countries, it has good and bad things, but I prefer tell you about the good things lol… First, if you will visit here someday, you need to visit the best places as Machu Picchu, The Colca Valley, The Historic Centre of Lima or you can travel in the Andes, the mountains are beautiful and the jungle is great too. The other thing that you need to do here, and it’s the most important, you need to eat. Here is the best food of the world, if you don’t eat nothing here, it’s like you never visited Peru. Peruvian food is awesome, our flavours are unique and fantastic. You will be in love with our food.
Besides, Peruvians are good people, so it’s difficult to explain in words how is Peru, because you need to be here and live it for knowing better about this country and culture…
Jake: Maybe you could invite me. And how is your music accepted there?
DJ Somiak: Of course, that would be great!!! Well, I am just starting in music, so I am not well known here, but about people that I know here and they listened to my music, they like my music, so I am glad for that. One problem here in Peru is people don’t listen to electronic music very much, so that’s a disadvantage for me.
Jake: Like the chicken & the egg, you're a DJ & a producer. Which came first?
DJ Somiak: Hahahaha, well, I am a producer, that’s first of course, then a DJ.
Jake: When did you start writing songs?
DJ Somiak: I started writing songs since I was 16.
Jake: What inspires you to write songs & what style best suits your tracks?
DJ Somiak: All sounds and my memories inspire me. When I am thinking about something that I lived, I transmit that feelings to my music.
About the style, I do Trance and House music so I think these are the principal styles of my songs.
Jake: I’ve been listening to some of your tracks & I was truly amazed. A lot of depth & imagination. What’s next?
DJ Somiak: Thanks, glad that you like these. Well, I am working in new projects, remixes and own productions, experimenting with new sounds and styles.
Jake: Where do you see your music in 5 years time?
DJ Somiak: I’ll see it in all the world. Played in the best clubs and on the radio. I think it’s a hard work to do but I have faith that it will be real.
Jake: What do you think of the current music scene & how it all appears to be going digital with I pods & itunes!
DJ Somiak: Well, I think the old times were better. At present, music scene is turning to a “fashion thing” and “standard sounds”.
I am not against the digital sales, but I prefer the CDs and the vinyls lol.
Jake: Are you excited about joining WDR? That’s World Domination Records for short for those of you reading this who didn’t know!
DJ Somiak: Yes, I am. It’s great to have the support from this label and working with them will be cooooooool…
Jake: These days digital distribution means you can reach the world with your music & you will be on sale with many famous ones. How do you feel about this? What current Artists are you most inspired by at the moment?
DJ Somiak: They are a lot of artists inpired me, but the most important are Tiesto, Mauro Picotto, Safri Duo, George Acosta, DJ Tatana, Sasha, DJ Tandu, Robert Miles, Fatboy Slim, Daft Punk, Miki Gonzalez, Roger Sanchez and David Guetta.
Jake: Well its been great chatting with you Mr. DJ or DJ or Somiak lol! We must do it again!
Dj Somiak: For me it’s great too and of course we will chat again, thanks!!!
