There is a subtle but important difference in procedures for handling private vs public events and in the personnel required .  Typically for private events stronger socializing,  interpersonal, hosting and greeting  skills are required as well as a wider degree of latitude as regards unacceptable patron’s behaviour.

In addition  because of the one off nature of and wide range of possible private events the Head of Security needs to more versatile and able to create a rapport with the client quickly .  It is often the case that ejecting patrons will be very very much the last resort and only done with the permission of the client.   We recommend  the client providing  a written as well as  oral brief.

To ensure our staff fit our client requirement's.  Security are often a venue's interface with the customers and need to be hosts as much as anything else.   We  look closely at

1. background.  We strongly prefer staff who have a proven  track record of  commitment, honesty and reliability.  Typically our SIA registered doorman will be in full time employment in a responsible professional job  (eg teacher, ex army) with a stable home life.   For private events we pick our most sociable staff with the strongest interpersonal, greeting and hosting skills

2. physique.  Whilst it is not essential for security to be well built it can be helpful as a deterrent.  However some of our clients prefer lighter built security staff particularly for hosting or VIP roles.  For private events,  unless there are specific reasons that come out of the briefing, we recommend slimmer built and female security

2. character. All Rhino Security staff are vetted and applicants who show in any way an aggressive, negative attitude or poor personal habits are not selected.   Polite empathetic BUT firm security can often defuse a situation before it even arises and deter trouble makers. For private events we recommend staff with strong socializations skills.

3.. interpersonal skills.  All Rhino Security are taught the importance of being polite at all times even when having to eject patrons from a venue or refuse entry.  This includes when customers may be being abusive.  Politeness’ is essential at all times both to defuse situations and to minimize inconvenience to other customers who may be in earshot.  For private events we prefer to allocate staff who score highly on interpersonal skills above any other skill security

4. dress code.  We strongly advocate security being dressed smartly and not under any circumstances in "bomber jackets" "caps" or other inappropriate attire.  Appropriate will vary from venue to venue from for example brightly colored T shirts for a children’s party  to Jasper Conran suits for a wedding.  If there is no preference  in general we recommend black suits, black shirts, formal Oxford shoes and overcoats in winter

5. equipment. Again this varies from event to event but in general we recommend Motorola 2 way radio with covert earpieces (there should be no need for the event organizer to have a radio but we do recommend the Head of Security is allowed to check in with the host to make sure he/she is happy with proceedings).  Hand held metal detectors ("wands") and other equipment will generally not be required unless specific risks are indentified in the client briefing.

As well as selecting the right security for a private event  it is also essential to supply the right  "Head Doorman" The Head Doorman as well as co coordinating his team needs to have the trust of the host .  In addition the Head Doorman has to often act as Door Host or Door Selector  which requires an excellent understanding of the event and the client’s preferences.  Again we prefer Head Doorman with, highly socialized and  interpersonal skills over any other skill category for private events .

One of the key financial advantages of using good security and Rhino Security London in particular is that you will find your customers are much  happier AND you may well also need less security than you think.
