Addiction to any substance—drugs, alcohol, or otherwise—shouldn't be left untreated. Just like most health and mental issues, addiction must be nipped at its roots to prevent it from progressing to an even more challenging concern. follow set principles, among which is that addiction is a complex but treatable disease. It affects mental function and behaviour, and it requires treatment that is readily available. While there is no single treatment that is appropriate for everyone, there are two treatment approaches that are proven to work best when combined. In choosing a treatment facility for your drug problem, go for a centre that can help you assess the kind of treatment approach and programs you need in order to overcome your addiction and all the behavioural issues it entails.

Medication and counselling or behavioural therapy are two of the most-used treatment approaches for addiction. Combined, these treatments create a therapeutic process that help clients get sober from their addiction and adjust their habits, lifestyle, attitude and behaviour so they won't have to return to addictive behaviours. In most cases, rehab starts with detoxification, which is then followed by treatment (medication and counselling), and relapse prevention or aftercare—three elements you should look for when choosing a facility to admit yourself into or get treatment from.

Medication is used to aid in many different aspects of the recovery or treatment process. For instance, medication can be prescribed to suppress withdrawal symptoms during the course of detox. Medically assisted withdrawal can help ease the first phase of treatment, which is very crucial, as clients cannot begin recovery and counselling without first ridding their body of drugs and its influences. Medication during treatment on the other hand, help restore and re-establish the normal function and balance of the brain, thus diminishing cravings and helping prevent relapse.

Behavioural treatment is a broad approach in that there are many types of therapy that can be used to modify attitudes and behaviours pertaining to drug abuse. These therapies can be done in an outpatient or in-patient environment and they can be implemented individually or in a group setting. Some common behavioural treatment methods used in various facilities include Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and/or Incentives, Multidimensional Family Therapy, and joining therapeutic communities (group therapy), which can be very helpful to people who are in their advanced stages of recovery. Therapeutic communities help reduce risks of relapse and ease the transition from drug-abuse to a drug-free lifestyle.
