A Master in Business Administration (MBA) can be a passport to professional success, as John Bigos, MD of one of the capital's most popular tourist attractions, London Duck Tours, knows only too well.
Gaining an MBA from Surrey Business School gave him a new professional perspective and enabled him to take his career in a more entrepreneurial direction. He is now offering another aspiring individual the same opportunity to gain this prestigious qualification, through the £5,000 London Duck Tours entrepreneurial scholarship.
When Bigos embarked on his MBA he was at a career crossroads. As a qualified company secretary, he was working as a director of administration at a major architectural practice when, aged 45, he wanted a new challenge.
"I had worked very hard for a long time and wanted to clear my head and embark on the MBA to help me decide what I wanted to do next.” he says. “I felt a quality qualification such as an MBA would make me stand out from the crowd. I had come from a disciplined work background which made studying easier and I loved every module on the Surrey programme, which revolved around real-life business practicalities, not just theories."
"If you have an MBA you look at the world from a different, broader perspective," adds Bigos." It is not just about figures on a piece of paper, it is about people, marketing, strategy and finding a bespoke or unique product or service. I would recommend the MBA to anyone but advise them to be open minded about the possible outcome. I have ended up owning an amazing company because I realised problem companies are a challenge for me. Others will take different things away from the programme and that is the beauty of it - a fresh perspective on your future career."
