VEGEPOLYS, the international plant cluster of excellence based in Western France, has launched a major European competition in plant-variety innovation in association with the SIVAL trade show (in Angers). The 2012 competition will be open to European plant breeders, whether they are exhibitors or not: VEGEPOLYS, SIVAL and French magazine Réussir Fruits & Légumes will award the prize for innovation in plant variety.
The SIVAL trade show is due to take place between 17 and 19 January 2012 in Angers (in Western France). It is the only trade show that brings together, among other plant companies, all the edible-seeds companies established in France.
To take part in the competition, companies must go to the SIVAL website (www.sivaldor.com) and submit a new variety breed which is not yet on the market, or one which has been marketed for less than a year. Applicants should send in their completed file before 30 October 2011, so that it can be validated by a panel of experts.
The competition’s winner will gain strong exposure throughout the sector, benefiting from media coverage of the SIVAL trade show itself. The European trade press – including the press specialising in seeds, wine-growing, medicinal plants, fruit and vegetables, ornamental horticulture, and agronomical research – is expected to cover the event extensively.
The winning company will be entitled to highlight its prize, as part of its own communications with business players and the media. Since the prize will be awarded at SIVAL, the product will also be exhibited at a dedicated venue within the trade show.
The SIVAL trade show will take place between 17 and 19 January 2012 in Angers (in Western France), and is open to those involved in specialist crop sectors.
To take part in the competition organised by VEGEPOLYS in partnership with SIVAL, companies must go to the SIVAL website (www.sivaldor.com) and submit a new variety breed which is not yet on the market (or one which has been marketed for less than a year). Applicants ought to send in their completed file before 30 October 2011, for validation by a panel of experts. The awards will be given during the SIVAL trade show, in mid-January 2012.

VEGEPOLYS is a cluster of excellence which groups plant companies and leading expert organisations in Pays-de-la-Loire (in Western France) such as INRA (French National Institute for Agricultural Research), Agrocampus Ouest INHP (Institute for Life, Food and Horticultural Sciences, and Landscaping), and Angers University. As part of VEGEPOLYS, lead agencies play an important role, including the Angers CPVO (Community Plant Variety Office) for registering varieties onto the European catalogue.
VEGEPOLYS develops projects that take into account current and expected changes in society worldwide, which means that it favours the development of environmentally friendly plant varieties that contribute towards human well-being. More particularly, VEGEPOLYS covers issues such as plant-variety innovation; the sanitary quality of seeds and plants; and, also, the design and development of urban and suburban landscapes.
