Citizenship Service

Both the young people and the volunteers involved in the project to date have found it immensely rewarding and interesting. The aim is to break down some of the social barriers and stereotypes which exist particularly between the generations, but also through the subject matters, we challenge preconceptions on a broader scale. Discussion topics covered have included gangs, homophobia, the role of the parent and ageing, amongst numerous others. We work in a variety of environments including mainstream secondary schools, sixth forms, training services, pupil referral units and with the Youth Offending Service. The project enables interested volunteers with an oppourtunity to become involved in a dynamic project, at a level which works for them. We have some volunteers who can work on two or three sessions a week, and others who attend a handful a year. There is no minimum or maximum commitment level. The project would suit a volunteer with strong communicative skills that is interested in social issues and working with young people. All abilities and backgrounds welcome We work with a vast spectrum of abilities and backgrounds and generally have sessions to suit all regardless of your experience to date. The team is close, there are currently fifteen volunteers, all of whom are supported and developed to suit their needs. We have an excellent rapport with each other and the group dynamics are strong. Due to the nature of the project, it is important that this is the case, as you may often speak about your own life experiences and memories. My aim, as the Project Manager is to ensure that the project reflects the needs, interests and abilities of my volunteers and engages them and the young people involved. If you have an idea or concept that you feel would work on an intergererational basis, I would love to hear from you and discuss the potential. We have plans to develop the project in numerous ways including more outdoor task focused sessions, but we will always keep the discussion/debating as the core of our work. If you would like any further details or want to discuss the project in more detail, please contact me, Suzannah Yianni, at Age UK Enfield.
