Stoptober is a new campaign from NHS Smokefree, it encourages people all across the UK to stop smoking together on 1st October for 28 days, and hopefully forever. Evidence shows that if a smoker can quit for 28 days they are five times more likely to quit smoking.
You can sign up at www.Smokefree.nhs.uk and receive a Stoptober pack, a smartphone app and text message support.
You should also consider acupuncture as an additional support. New research demonstrates that acupuncture therapy is effective for the treatment of depression due to nicotine withdrawal.
A randomized study of seventy-four patients with depression due to nicotine withdrawal were divided into two groups. Group one received western medicine in the form of Fluoxetine, a medication used for the treatment of depression. Group two received acupuncture at 6 specific points. DU20 (Baihui), SP6 (Sanyinjiao), EX-HN3 (Yintang), LR3 (Taichong), PC6 (Neiguan) and LI4 (Hegu).
In the acupuncture group thirty-four of thirty-eight patients demonstrated significant improvement. In the medication group thirty-three of thirty-six patients demonstrated significant improvement. Based on their findings the researchers concluded, “The efficacy of acupuncture is similar to that of Fluoxetine in the treatment of depression in nicotine withdrawal."
So why not give acupuncture a go, we can offer treatments that will help you cope with the side effects of nicotine withdrawal.
