Ray Ban Wayfarer
designer sunglasses, Ray Ban Wayfarer
Ray Ban Wayfarers were designed in 1952 by American optical designer Raymond Stegeman and have been manufactured by Ray Ban since 1956. The Wayfarer design was a radically new shape, "a mid-century classic to rival Eames Chairs and Cadillac Tail Fins" which took advantage of revolutionary new plastic molding technology to storm into the eyewear market.
30 years later in the mid 1980’s the Ray Ban Wayfarers popularity rose amongst iconic musicians, including Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Johnny Marr, Blondie's Debbie Harry, Madonna, Elvis Costello, and members of U2. The Wayfarer also had appearances in The Blues Brothers, Miami Vice, Moonlighting, and The Breakfast Club.
Ray-Ban's Wayfarer offerings expanded from two models in 1981 to more than 40 models by 1989, and Wayfarers were the decade's sunglasses of choice.
In 2001, the Wayfarer underwent a significant redesign, with the frames made smaller and less angular, and changed from Cellulose Acetate to a lighter injected plastics. The changes were intended to update the frames' style and to make them easier to wear (the frames' previous tilt made them impossible redesign.
Still to this day, the Ray Ban Wayfarer’s popularity amongst musicians and celebrities is known. The pop singer and Grammy award-nominated Katy Perry features music video "Teenage Dreams" sporting a pair of black Wayfarers and Bruno Marrs also is seen sporting Wayfarers in the music video “The Lazy Song”.
Today, Ray Ban Wayfarers are available in Ray Ban Original Wayfarer sunglass, Ray Ban New Wayfarer sunglass, and Ray Ban Wayfarer Folding sunglass styles. Ray Ban also made available the spectacle versions of these styles which has been the benchmark for the geek sheek fashion. Other designers such as SuperDry, Converse, Marc Jacobs and Hugo Boss have designed their own versions of the Wayfarer but nothing can equal the iconic Ray Ban Wayfarer.
