After experiences with domestic abuse, X-Men star, Halle Berry claims it’s one of her life’s purposes “to help others, especially women” through abusive relationships. The Oscar winner saw violence throughout her childhood as her mother, Judith Hawkins, was abused “day after day” by former husband, Jerome Berry. Following an abusive childhood, Halle Berry later became victim of domestic abuse at the hands of a former lover and has since volunteered at the Jenesse Centre, a domestic violence prevention and intervention organisation in America. Domestic violence is common here in the United Kingdom with an average of 2 women killed every week by a current or former partner. Adjacent to this, the Women’s Aid reports “an estimated 4.6 Million women in England and Wales have experienced domestic abuse since the age of sixteen”. An alarming statistic we must act against.
