Since 1st December, the Criminal Records Bureau has re-branded and will be known as The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) this is due to the merger of the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and The Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). For further guidance please go to www.criminalrecordsservices.co.uk – Further updates will be available soon. The merger has taken place to simplify the process and administration. Eligibility and definitions are being changed to reduce the volume of applications made for people that require a disclosure. The changes that have been introduced are due to the new Freedom of Information Act passed in May 2012. The Government review was carried out by Sunita Mason, Independent Advisor for Criminality Information management and the report was to introduce “A Common Sense Approach” to the checking of applicant’s history. Sunita quotes “Everyone I consulted, agreed that checks were necessary and relevant to prevent another tragedy such as the Soham murders, but also that such checks should not blight people’s prospects and opportunities.” The changes will introduce a scaling back procedure to reduce the number of applications made in error and will identify in detail who will be eligible for specific checks that will be relevant to the job role the candidate will be placed into. The new checks will remain the same as CRB checks but the brand name will change to DBS CHECKS. The Enhanced and Standard Disclosure and Barring checks will continue and will remain the same, inclusive of the process of applying and checking criminal history of your employee’s. The CRB have released an example of the Disclosure and Barring Service application form. The format is identical to the previous form but there will be slight changes to the questions asked and references to the wording, for example, the removal of “Vulnerable Adults
