Carried out in accordance with BRE 365 these tests are designed to enable soil infiltration rates to be determined and facilitate soakaway design.  The test involves the excavation of a trial pit to a representative depth through the soil in question and the filling of the pit with water several times in quick sucession whilst monitoring the rate at which the water seeps away.  Groundwater levels should remain at least below the base of the soakaway regardless of seasonal fluctuations.
