Do you need to move a website, web application, mailboxes or a
database to a new server or hosting environment? If so then have you
considered outsourcing this process to a company that specialises in
Migrating your domains to a new server may, on the face of it, seem
to be a simple enough job. If you are moving a flat HTML website along
with a couple of mailboxes then it probably is a fairly simple job,
provided you understand how to configure the new server and platform.
However, many commercial websites are now dynamic, database driven web
applications with user generated content or ecommerce functionality and
the migration of these sites requires careful planning and management to
ensure that any disruption to the service is kept to a minimum. This
becomes even more important when the site is generating revenue -
downtime = lost income.
Then you will have to consider the mail communications. Many
corporations run their mail communications from a Microsoft Exchange
server that will share the some domain as the web server but reside on
an entirely different hosting environment. The migration will need to
take this into account to avoid disruption to communications.
Alternatively, POP or IMAP mailboxes may be hosted on the same
server as the site and these mailboxes will need to be created and
configured before the new server goes live.
