RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course - Kent
Powerboating is exhilarating, fun and fast, and there is no better way to gain an understanding of these boats and how to harness their power than with the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course in Kent! Covering many basic skills, such as handling the boat safely under power in a variety of conditions, this superb experience lasts for two days and is an ideal introduction to the pleasures of powerboating. No previous knowledge or experience is required and you do not need to have completed Level 1 in order to progress to Level 2.
Most of your two days will be spent on the boat leaning all the various aspect of safe boat handling and other basic rules of the road, and combined with a short classroom session afterwards, this will give you a good, broad base of experience. This is a fantastic introduction to powerboating, and with fully qualified and highly trained staff to guide you all the way, you’ll be amazed at how far you can come in just two days!
Before you begin your RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course, you will be given a small work book for some home study prior to the course date, so you understand some of the basics before beginning. Then, on the day of your course, your experience will begin with a short safety briefing and presentation at the centre, and then it’s straight off to Dover Harbour to get kitted up and board the boat!
The course is designed so you spend more than 70% of your time on the boat, and you will learn all about the art of mooring, turning in confined spaces, boat preparation, boat handling at slow and high speed, recovering a man overboard, how to get a boat going fast and keeping it there comfortably, and, of course, basic rules of the road and safety issues. The theory based element of the day will cover personal buoyancy, insurance, loading and how this affects handling and performance, balance and trim, awareness of other water users, accepting a tow and rope work, as well as covering subjects such as how to plan a journey safely, weather and tides.
The aim of the Level 2 course is to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats, and it is also the minimum requirement for anyone wishing to charter a powerboat without a skipper. There are no examinations in the RYA powerboat series of courses; progress is determined by continuous assessment and it is the job of the instructors to identify and correct any weaknesses. The boats used are exceptional and designed to give you the very best learning experience, and are fitted with all the equipment and electronics needed to ensure you get a good grounding in boat handling and navigation.
