Murderers, hangings as well as an angry prison guard, can you handle the spirits who roam this Gaol?

Constructed in the 13th century by Edward I the Castle was headed by the Grey family up until 1646. Used to house both male and female prisoners, it was originally used as a “waiting area “ for those that were to face more severe forms of punishment for crimes committed. The official Jail part was constructed in 1775 by a J. Turner and was created to serve the whole of Denbighshire. Many met their fate whilst staying here, the last execution being in 1903. However just prior as well as immediately following this time period is when the first reports of many strange and unusual events started to take place and were believed to be paranormal.

The most well known haunting of the Gaol is related to a man named William Hughes who was held and executed here in 1903. After he and his wife lost their child, deciding that he could no longer bear the agony, he left the house. He was charged with the offence of “family desertion” and sent to the jail for 3 months. On his release, he went back to the house and shot his wife dead. After turning himself in,the jury found him guilty in 10 minutes  and he was hanged. It is usually female visitors who seem to "feel" his presence around the building and the yards.

Another named spirit is thought to be William Kerr who was a not well liked watchman who would make inmates go without food and was very strict . He would beat inmates for no reason. One day, Kerr simply disappeared.

Other spirits are believed to roam the building including one inmate who was shot in the leg during an escape attempt in 1913.
