Tariq Drabu said “I am shocked that there are still thousands of people living in the United Kingdom that are completely unaware or ignore how their diet impacts their oral health.”
Tariq Drabu is a leading dentist and specialist oral surgeon who was born and educated in Manchester in the United Kingdom. He is one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the UK at twenty one years old before working in some of the busiest dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia. Dr Drabu always had a passion for oral surgery, so on his return to the UK he received his Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is now the proud owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services (CATS) at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. He is also a mentor and tutor to postgraduate dentists in oral surgery at the UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston.
Tariq Drabu was following up on an article published on 25 June 2014 on the British Dental Health Foundation website. The full article can be read here.
Tariq Drabu said “A survey was conducted which looked into the dietary habits of the British public and it revealed that three in four people completely ignore the impact their diet has on their oral health. It also showed that a third of the public are unaware that their diet and oral health are related in any way. This is a serious concern and we need to find ways to educate the public and help them make the necessary changes to improve their diet and their oral health moving forward.”
Tariq Drabu in Manchester went on to say “It comes down to education and part of my job as a dental professional is to educate my patients on oral care, in addition to treating them. Obviously prevention is better than cure and a poor diet can have a significantly negative impact on oral health resulting in anything from tooth decay to bad breath.”
Tariq Drabu closed in saying “Sugar is probably the most dangerous substance when it comes to oral health and figures have already revealed that sugar intake is on the rise throughout the country. All we can do as dental professionals is ensure we educate all our patients on correct brushing methods, the importance of flossing, regular dental check-ups and diet to try and prevent the number of people throughout the UK with oral health issues.”
