I like to think our last project is always our best and
the current will surpass that. Getting to the end of project and deciding it is
not as good as the work which has gone before would be disappointing.
Attached is a photo of The Montpellier in Cheltenham.
This represents a change in style for us as we have become known for
contemporary restaurants but both myself and the client agreed it was time for
a change and a return to traditional elegance to differentiate this independent
restaurant from the contemporary and now very well fitted out chain restaurants
across the country.
The Montpellier Cheltenham is based on a Paris Brasserie
and whilst we salvaged the panelling and bar front from this former bank site,
extensive work has been undertaken to this Grade II listed building to restore
its elegant interior including the removal of two large built insitu safes,
stud walls, suspended ceilings and bandit glass.
The HH Martin original Brazilian Mahogany panelling was
the key to this project but over the years it had been covered over with hard
board in places and in others it was missing completely or was damaged but through
the use of bench seating on the back wall we managed to salvage just enough to
complete the whole project and the panelling is now complemented by period
lighting, a new marble floor and restored and new period cornice. During the
renovation we uncovered an elegant cast iron column which had been clad several
times over in the past 50 years but another similarly clad support turned out
to hide a less attractive modern steel column so a decision was made to remove
this structural universal column and to replace it with a structural circular
steel post with detailing to match the other original.
