Yoga is both an art and a science originating in India and dating back around 5000 years. Yoga means 'union' - the union of body, mind and spirit through breath and movement. The term 'Hatha Yoga' describes the practices usually taught in Westen Yoga classes. These are: asana -physical poses or positions; pranayama - breath work, and relaxation. These practices are around 200 years old and are suitable for people of all ages and abilities.

A typical class lasts for 1 hour or 1.5 hours and begins with sequences to warm up joints and muscles to prepare for asana practice. Some breath work is included and the class ends with a guided relaxation - Bliss! Yoga is practised in bare feet. No special clothing is required. Some venues provide mats and blocks (Shambhala Studios provide mats and blocks). It is advisable not to eat for 2 hours prior to the class.

Yoga is known to have many physical benefits but works on all levels of our being - physical, emotional and psychological. Therefore, as we become stronger and more flexible in our bodies we become stronger and more flexible emotionally and mentally! Modern research confirms what Yogis have always known - that Yoga can help with physical ailments as well as concerns such as stress, anxiety, 'nerves' and depression.
