Robot systems integrator and FANUC Strategic Partner, Pacepacker, is supporting BARA’s Automating Manufacturing Programme which aims to increase robot uptake in the UK, with the introduction of an economical robot palletising system for automation-shy SME manufacturers – the Blu-Robot.

An active member of BARA (the British Automation and Robot Association), Pacepacker has been encouraged by the association to promote the programme which is part of a two year BIS funded £600,000 scheme to address recommendations made in a recent industry study, Application of Automation in UK Manufacturing 27 Sept 2010. Looking to educate SME manufacturers, the scheme includes a series of Automation Roadshows which will highlight the benefits of automation along with case studies to show the approach, the need and the benefit gained from both new and pre-owned equipment. “UK manufacturers understand the benefits a palletising robot can provide in terms of fast and accurate stacking,” says Pacepacker MD Dennis Allison, “but for low production or seasonal companies new systems have often been cost prohibitive. To address this need we have developed the Blu-Robot palletising solution, which is half the cost of a new system,” adds Dennis.

The Blu-Robot, which typically incorporates a high quality ABB robotic arm originating from the automotive industry and is approximately 35% of the way through its expected 100,000 operational hour lifespan, has been successfully installed by numerous seasonal fresh produce packers. “We are seeing a number of emerging markets in the food industry, which echo’s BARA’s 2010 statistics that robot sales in the food and drink industry are up by 228% on 2006 figures. We hope that the programme will keep this recent momentum going,” remarks Dennis.

BARA President, Mike Wilson, is delighted with the support that members are showing to the Programme: “We are urging our members to encourage their customers to join our roadshows and welcome Pacepacker’s support. These regional events will provide manufacturers with an excellent source of information and know-how so that they can overcome the obstacles suppressing their uptake of automation and enabling them to compete more successfully in the global market,” says Mike Wilson, BARA President.

Along with the Blu-Robot, which is supplied fully checked, tested, repainted and comes with a 12 month parts warranty together with readily available service and spares back up, Pacepacker also work with FANUC as a Strategic Partner to supply new robots for palletising and pick & place systems.
