A combination of the therapies can be used to improve your comfort, increase any restriction to movement or range of movement of a joint, and to remove adhesions within tissues such as scar tissue.
Scar tissue forms when a muscle is damaged. This can be due to surgery, over exertion, twist or fall, or working a fatigued muscle that is not properly conditioned to the demand placed upon it.
On occasions excess scar tissue can form during the repair process. This is most noticeable following joint replacement surgery when the range of movement of the joint fails to reach expected standards. This can take place when the client heals very quickly, the tissues can adhere themselves together preventing the limb from flexing.
During the physical therapy session, clients can expect to receive many forms of therapy to encourage the breakdown of the scar tissue, increase the range of motion and to be provided with advice to perform any exercises to maintain the increased range of movement. The goal of any therapy session is to improve and maintain the range, be more comfortable and to strengthen the tissues to prevent re-injury.
