A ground source heat pump extracts heat from the ground and uses it to heat your building and provide hot water all year round, whatever the weather.  It is ideally used to provide most of your space heating, with a conventional heating system providing a top-up when needed.  Usually coils of pipe are buried in a series of trenches, but vertical boreholes are also an option.  Liquid in the pipes, usually water with antifreeze - absorbs heat from the ground.  A compressor moves the refrigerant around the pipework and a pump transfers the heat to a hot water tank feeding the distribution system.
