NEWSLETTER February 2011

It is now the end of February and I am getting ready for the new season.  Everything in Patron, and on Jez-y-belle, has been washed, cleaned, polished and serviced ready for April when the boats go back in the water.  I am a great believer of the old adage: ‘Look after your boat and your boat will look after you.’ Patron’s name does mean: ‘My Protector’ and she has always lived up to it!

The new season starts on April 1 and bookings are already open for those of you who know when you would like to come.

One thing I am doing in addition to last year is to offer ‘Book a Berth’ trips.  I have had many enquiries from people who do not wish to book the whole boat for themselves, especially Patron, but want to come on longer journeys and share the cost, experience and enjoyment, with maybe just one of two other lone sailors.  I am therefore offering the following ‘Book a Berth’ trips:

  • 30th April to 2nd May -Obby 'Orse Day (May 1st) at Padstow, a really enjoyable festival.  Two days sailing, 9/10 hours per day, and Obby 'Orse Day off in Padstow - £300 per person.  Early morning starts due to the tide.
  • 17th - 19th June - Lundy Race for people with experience of sailing. We race from Ilfracombe, around Lundy and back -approximately 55 miles with an 11 hour cut off time.  In addition to the strong tides there are also two tidal races, one each end of the island with very tricky tidal back eddies on the far side.  If we don't get to the other side of Lundy before the tide turns we go backwards!  Around 55 - 75 boats enter of which less than half ever get round in the time allowed – but it is fun and very good experience.  Three day trip including sail up to Ilfracombe with race boat handling practice, the race, and return via Clovelly to wait the tide.  Two crew maximum. £300 per person.
  • 2nd to 8th July - Scillies.  Appledore to Newquay (60 miles), Newquay to Scillies (60 miles), 2 days exploring Scillies by boat and foot. 3 day return via St Ives and Padstow. 7 days -£600 per person.  This could be extended by a day or two allowing more time to enjoy the Scillies should people wish.
  • 6th to 13th August – .  Experience the highly tidal Bristol Channel via Watermouth, Cardiff and Portishead on the way up; Cardiff and Ilfracombe on way home; with a day off in Bristol.  Note Avonmouth is the second highest tidal rise and fall in the world!  8 days.  - £650 per person.

Dates and trips are obviously dependent on the weather and if you wish to come but can’t make these dates or don’t like these itineraries, then give me a ring and we will see what we can arrange.

For those lone sailors who only want to come out for the day, I will also be offering to mix lone sailors for a great day out.  Again ring me and when two or three of you can get together we will go out!

I look forward to seeing old friends and new this summer and hope the weather will be good.  A steady Force 4 to 5 all summer with no rain and plenty of sun with the wind changing direction for us according to our course would be nice!!
