Rebecca Bidwell, Director of Bidwell Henderson explains why Bidwell Henderson set out to be different to a run of the mill law cost drafting firm: In a market where Solicitors' costs are being squeezed from every angle we decided to try something different. At the outset we all agreed that the most important thing was to provide a very high level of service with a transparent fee structure. There is nothing more frustrating than paying a Cost Draftsman a substantial fee, taken from your hard earned profit costs and then having to amend things yourself or raise questions when you spot something is missing or an error has been made to the bill/points of dispute/costs budget etc. I remember how frustrating this can be as I worked as a Legal Executive for a firm of Solicitors at the beginning of my career. We work hard to check that every piece of legal costs work produced is accurate and where any doubt arises over a particular issue we all assist each other to find the answer (or the best answer we can find if it’s one of those tricky grey areas!). We provide detailed letters of advice as standard and if we need to check something with you, we telephone you and give you the options before we send the papers back. Can you guess that this is something else I found particularly annoying when working as a Legal Executive?! We have our own courier service which was set up to make the costs process smooth and stress free for our clients. You spend enough time dealing with the file as a Solicitor and I think it’s important to ensure that when the case has concluded, the effort required by you to get paid is minimal. Let’s face it – you have plenty of other things to attend to. Being friendly and approachable certainly helps. We tend to build longstanding relationships with clients. If you ask my husband, however, he would probably tell you I am too approachable as I regularly get waylaid by strangers looking for nothing short of a 10 minute random chat! We each invest in the firm continuously because we want to. Whether this is useful information sheets for clients, SEO, marketing, strengthening our procedures, reading recent guidance (or if you are Ann Henderson, every piece of news or guidance you can find irrespective of the time of night!) or just doing a bit of work on the weekends because we want to. At the very outset we had a clear vision for how we wanted the firm to run and having invested in secure IT and case management software we are able to provide an additional log-in service to our clients teamed with the experience and ability to cost files from anywhere in the UK remotely. This has given us a huge advantage. It is becoming clear that more and more firms are working with paperless offices and paperless case management systems. We aim to go over and above for our clients. It’s as simple as that. This works both ways. Clients remain with the firm and we learn more and more in the process!
