Fjallraven has a history of quality, durability and style.
In the 1960s, outdoor clothing was not as practical as it is today. This became clear during the Scandinavian Greenland Expedition in 1966, during which Fjällräven's revolutionary thermal tent was used. After the success of the tent and following long discussions with the members of the expedition about their clothing, Åke began to seriously consider manufacturing a jacket and trousers for the outdoors. One day, just before going on a hike, a roll of extremely durable tent fabric happened to catch Åke's eye.
The first Fjällräven jacket
Åke had previously dismissed the durable fabric because it was too heavy for his lightweight tent. He placed it on the floor and started to draw. With his grandfather's tailoring scissors, he cut out the outline of a jacket, turned on the sewing machine and patiently guided the needle across the fabric. The first Fjällräven jacket was born.
After tests in nature, the fabric proved itself to have the properties that Åke felt were missing in his earlier outdoor clothing - it was extremely durable and dried quickly. The only thing that needed improvement was its ability to repel moisture.
While Åke searched his mind for ways to improve the fabric's properties, memories from the ski jump in his hometown of Örnsköldsvik popped into his head. In order to avoid getting wet while waiting for their turn, he and the other jumpers had started doing more than just waxing their skis for a better glide. They even "waxed" the backsides of their trousers to keep their bottoms dry. Was it possible to do something similar with the jacket's fabric?
Åke experimented with a mixture of bee wax and paraffin. He applied the wax mixture to the fabric using heat from his wife Elisabeth's hair dryer. The wax transformed the fabric, making it water resistant, windproof and, if possible, even more durable. One of the world's most hardwearing outdoor fabrics was born. The waxed tent fabric was named G-1000 (G for Greenland). The wax was named Greenland Wax and the jacket got the name Greenland Jacket.
G-1000, stronger than ever
The need for durable expedition clothing accelerated the development of Fjällräven's clothes. Soon, mountain trekkers, fishers, hunters and all outdoor enthusiasts were able to enjoy spending time in nature – regardless of the weather conditions. Today G-1000 is one of the outdoor world's most popular fabrics for all types of outdoor activities and the early Greenland Jackets have been passed on in generations.
