CRISIS COUNSELLING

By: Elizabeth Welch, MSc. MBACP (Accred.), CBT Therapist, Group Therapist and Supervisor  04/07/2012

My therapeutic provision in the areas of trauma response and critical incident stress debriefing groups involves proactive interventions known as 'psychological first aid'. The aim of these confidential services and the treatment approach is to promote support and encourage processing of traumatic experiences in a group setting in order to accelerate recovery before harmful stress reactions have had chance to affect people with PTSD and their families.

National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) advise that post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop following a stressful event or situation..." "About 25-30% of people who have experienced a traumatic event go on to develop PTSD." (NICE 2008).

Support offered includes the following:

  • Critical incident support
  • Bereavement counselling
  • Stress management
  • Trauma response
  • Critical incident stress de-briefing
  • Death at work
  • Road traffic incidents

Trauma response
Many experts in the field of crisis counselling hold that intervention should be immediately implemented and that the counsellor should work with a solution focused approach.
