David Hackett was asked to speak on one of his favourite subjects - soils and ecology – as a
guest speaker at IEEM’s Summer Conference in London. The conference, “Enhancing Biodiversity Through
Soil Management”, aimed to increase ecologists’ understanding of soil ecology, the ecosystem benefits
of soils and how the management and restoration of soils can achieve better outcomes for biodiversity.
David advised delegates on eco-engineering techniques with soil, in particular how the new British
Standards for topsoil and subsoil can be used to design landscapes which enhance biodiversity. David
was part of a small team of professionals which re-wrote the British Standard for topsoil in
2007 (BS3882) and which has recently written a new British Standard for subsoil, due for release
later this year.
