A significant percentage of the population suffers from a type of phobia. Some people find it to be mildly distressing but manageable. For others it can be seriously debilitating and distressing. A phobia is described as an irrational fear of a particular stimulus. The stimulus can be a situation, a thing, or an activity. People who have phobias will go to great lengths to avoid whatever they fear. Some will tolerate it whilst dealing with considerable anxiety. Some people experience panic attacks and in severe cases the phobia can end up controlling a person’s life. By accessing the underlying cause of the phobia and eliminating the person’s conditioned subconscious response to the stimulus Hypnotherapy can be used to treat a phobia. A hypnotherapist will try to discover the initial trigger which caused the phobia to develop. Sometimes the client can not remember the event. It may be a memory which has been repressed for many years. Repression is used to protect our mind by keeping memories of trauma out of our conscious mind until we are ready and able to deal with it. A therapist will initially work to eliminate or alter the emotional response associated with the phobia this will allow the individual to visualize themselves overcoming the phobia.
