Initial results from a new online survey designed to measure the IT effectiveness of small businesses shows that one in four of the companies surveyed are barely maintaining their IT operations. The report further reveals that these companies are falling further behind as economic pressures have forced nearly half of them to reduce, delay or cancel crucial IT spending.

Since more than two thirds of the small businesses surveyed have indicated that IT and Web commerce are critical to their success, the results are especially disturbing! The lack of IT investment, the lack of qualified staff to manage it, will ultimately create further obstacles resulting in these businesses losing their competitive edge.

As a result of the survey, the suggestion for small businesses is that they concentrate on their core competencies whilst exploring the option of outsourcing their IT function. Taking advantage of outsourcing will reduce or eliminate their capital expenditure and ensure that they have the technology to match their business needs.
